Americana Flag Box

The Americana Flag Box is finished with paints and made to look a little worn by scuffing away strategic areas of paint with coarse sandpaper then applying a dark stain to make it look “older”.

The completed project is about is about 10.5″ wide x 8.7″ deep x 5.5 ” tall.

STEP 1 – Upload Project

Open the Designer software and open the included project file(s). You can then simply compile (upload) the project(s) to your memory card.

NOTE: Carve times are as follows:

  • Box_Lid-and_Sides.mpc
    • Normal: 1 hr. 45 min.
    • Best: 2 hr 58 min.
  • Legged_Sides.mpc
    • Normal: 1 hr. 5 min.
    • Best: 1 hr 49 min.

Take and insert the card into your machine and load the project board.

STEP 2 – Carving

You will see “Project Menu” on your LCD display. Press “1”, then scroll to the desired project and press the green ENTER button to select it. Then follow the prompts to carve the project.

STEP 3 – Separate Parts

Separate all the parts from the boards with a utility knife or hobby saw. Sand the components to remove the tabs and any undesirable toolmarks.

STEP 4 – Assembly

Cut a box bottom .75 ” x 5.5″ x 9″. Glue the “no leg” sides to the bottom. Clamp until dry.

When dry, turn the assembly upside down so the top edges of the box sit flush on the table surface. Then glue the “legged sides” to the assembly. Allow to dry.

Mark your hinge locations, pre-drill the screw holes and check hinge fit. Remove the hinges until final finish is applied. (I painted the box, fit hinges, then removed before staining and clearcoat.)

STEP 5 – Apply Finish

Apply your choice of finish. Here’s what I used on my own “Americana Flag Box” made from Select Pine: (photos on next page)

  • Applied Kilz White Primer (by brush) to all surfaces except the inside of the box.
  • Sanded, then painted the Red and Blue sections with acrylic craft paints.
  • “Scuffed” the surfaces and edges to make it look “worn”
  • Applied Rust-Oleum American Walnut Stain to all, then wiped most stain off for an antiquing effect to make it look “old”
  • Several light coats of Krylon Clear acrylic spray

FINAL

Reinstall your hinges to complete the project. I hope you’ve enjoyed making your “Americana Flag Box”. God Bless America!

Happy Carving!
