“The CarveWright can create amazingly intricate and accurate text and graphics.”

"Amazing Art...Amazing Talent"

Simply put, there are some people who are born to be woodworkers. Dave Smith is one such person.  As a young child, Dave was instinctively drawn to his father’s hand saw and rasp in an effort to customize his wooden toy trucks with corn cob wheels. This was only the beginning of a life changing journey for Dave.

As Dave grew older, he developed a strong aptitude and enjoyment of machinery, and eventually opened up his own Diesel injection pump business. Unfortunately, in 1993, Dave developed colon cancer, and was forced to retire from his new endeavor. Soon after his chemotherapy, Dave opened up a 2200 square foot woodshop, and began creating projects that pushed his wood crafting skills to new levels.

Dave first heard about the CarveWright while having coffee with fellow woodworkers. After researching the CarveWright, Dave’s interest and excitement skyrocketed! It didn’t take long before he purchased his own CarveWright in February 2007. He was immediately captivated by the vast array of capabilities – but even more so –the seemingly endless possibilities that his CarveWright now afforded him. It did not take long before Dave put his CarveWright to the test. “My granddaughter was getting married in March, and I was asked to create a pen holder and plaque for the wedding, with the bride and groom’s name, wedding date, and verse carved into the piece.” The following month, another of Dave’s granddaughters requested a keepsake box, as she too was getting married. “So in just 4 months, I had created two inspirational keepsakes using the CarveWright.”

One of the more meaningful pieces Dave has created is titled “Amazing Grace.” Dave stated, “A friend of mine made a wooden plaque with the song ‘Amazing Grace’ carved on it. I thought this looked pretty neat, so I went home and sat at the computer and pulled out a songbook.” After creating a few notes and music lines, Dave created his version of the “Amazing Grace” piece. He did, however, find out that the notes were out of place, as he was not musically inclined. Fortunately, after a friend sat down with Dave for a few hours, he quickly learned the art of reading music, and was able to finish the piece.

Dave states, “In my opinion, one of the greatest features of the CarveWright is the high level of decorative detail that you can create. The CarveWright can create amazingly intricate and accurate text and graphics.” Dave witnessed firsthand the precision of the CarveWright when creating his beloved “Amazing Grace”, as well as a book case and fireplace mantle that required customized detailing.

About the CarveWright, Dave stated, “The possibilities are endless! Decorative boxes, plaques, pictures and picture frames, and of course carving.”

Dave said, “I love life, and I love my little country workshop by the side of my well stocked lake. I thank God everyday for my health and the life he has blessed me with.”

Dave resides with his wife, Treena, in Daleville, Indiana.

We thank Dave and look forward to seeing many more of his wonderful pieces in the near future.

What is the difference between possessing a talent and learning a skill?  A talent is defined as “a natural ability”. A skill is something you learn. With talent, a craftsman, such as Michael Leslie, can take that skill and really make some incredible things happen.
