“I love this machine, and I wouldn’t have to think twice about buying a second one.”

"Artist Lives to Work"

In today’s world where living to work, and not working to live, is the “norm”; very few people can say they love their work and that their work is their passion.  However, Ken Maurin (aka Kenm810) is one of the rare few that are doing what they love, so much so that most days it doesn’t feel like work.

Ken lives in Southeast Michigan with his loving wife Barb, and together they have three wonderful children, as well as four beautiful grandchildren.  Ken says that he is of “retirement age,” but he loves his work as an Art Conservator so much that he has no plans on retiring anytime soon.  His love of art dates back to his days in high school, and it only grows as the time passes.  When reflecting on his younger years, he states, “Being a starving artist myself, I had to earn a living.”

After being fortunate enough to have a few of his pieces of art displayed at the Detroit Institute of Arts, by invitation, Ken began working in the building trades.  Things were looking up for him until, as he states, “like most young men in that time, I won the ‘lottery,’ and went to serve my country.”  Upon admirably completing his time serving our country, Ken attended school for electronics.  Over the years Ken has worked with and designed circuitry for alarm systems, as well as designed and built custom cabinetry.  He is also a Silversmith and Goldsmith, and belonged to a Faceters Guild for cutting custom gemstones.

Ken purchased his CompuCarve through Sears in December of 2006.  His background in art and electronics has been greatly beneficial in his usage of the software and the machine.  When asked what his favorite aspect of the machine and/or software was, Ken was not able to give a definitive response.  He said he simply loved everything about it, and he also loves the diversity of the machine and software.  Aside from making beautiful works out of wood, Ken carves acrylics and foams, and enjoys casting and block printing.  Like many others, Ken is also a greatly appreciated member of our forum.  When time permits, he is more than willing to offer assistance to the members in the forum, and he can be found under the name Kenm810.

From starving artist, to electronics, to cabinetry, to art conservator, Ken is a man of many talents.  He loves his life, he loves his family, he loves helping people and he loves his CompuCarve.  When professing how much he loves his CompuCarve, Ken says, “I love this machine, and I wouldn’t have to think twice about buying a second one.”

What is the difference between possessing a talent and learning a skill?  A talent is defined as “a natural ability”. A skill is something you learn. With talent, a craftsman, such as Michael Leslie, can take that skill and really make some incredible things happen.
